Granny style

Photos: Melanie Acevedo

During my move I discovered a ton of magazines that I forgot I owned (!) and am SO excited to share these images with you from the Dec/Jan 2005 issue of Elle Decor! Designer Steven Sclaroff designed this home for Camilla and Carl Sorenson, (co-owner of Nanz hardware) by looking to the past for inspiration. The article raised a fascinating point that "when quizzed about style in general, it's remarkable how many women (and even men) cite their grandmothers as pinnacles of domestic chic, recalling a time when people went all out with those things so often left aside today: curtains, rugs, perfume, bric-a-brac." Sclaroff's marriage of granny and modern day style resulted in a timeless look (complete with warm & fuzzy feelings associated with grandma ;)

(I can't get enough of the entryway wallpaper! It reminds me of the paper on my blog banner:)

Sclaroff really does have a distinct style, and such flair with color. Love the bedroom!

This presumes, of course, that one's grandmother was rich and wintered in Palm Beach. My grandmother was all about hand-crocheted afghans, alas.

Haha- I totally hear ya. My grandma wasn't rich by ANY stretch of the imagination, but I think what you can take from this is certain elements of style from that era- regardless of income levels. The colors in the bedroom (especially the blue damask headboard), the tailored blanket instead of a duvet/comforter on the bed, the shape of the lamps, old scenic paintings, use of pattern and color, etc. That's what makes it feel granny to me and I think that's what Sclaroff was going for too.

I posted about this apartment a little while back. It's fabulous isn't it! He also did Kate Spade's apartment...I just wish his website had photos of past projects so we could see some more of his work.
